PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Acute and chronic pain afflict military personnel and veterans in proportions exceeding the general population and pain is a leading cause of disability. Characteristics of modern warfare produce serious, but survivable, injuries to bodily tissues and to the peripheral and central nervous systems that cause acute pain and, in many cases, lead to chronic pain. Providing a continuum of adequate pain management, from the time of injury through to recovery of function and quality of life, is crucial to the well-being of our warriors and veterans. Left untreated, pain can have life-long consequences.
This educational initiative is designed to support the development of a continuum of effective pain care services to benefit both the active military and the veteran population by providing military, VA clinicians with the latest research and developments in pain management. This initiative will help clinicians offer the highest level of skill and expertise aimed to prevent long-term suffering and disability and to provide effective pain relief.

TARGET AUDIENCE
This activity is intended for federal health care clinicians (physicians, clinical pharmacists, physician assistants, advanced practice nurses, and nurses) involved in the management of pain for veterans and military personnel working within the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, and the US Public Health Service.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
This activity was designed to address the following IOM competencies: provide patient-centered care; work in interdisciplinary teams; employ evidence-based practice; apply quality improvement techniques; utilize informatics
Upon completion of the activities in this initiative, the participants should be better able to:
- Adapt current practice to recognize pain as a progressive disease process, not simply a response to injury
- Interpret the latest evidence regarding the neurological mechanisms of pain
- Define consequences of unrelieved pain and summarize the importance of identifying and managing associated comorbidities found within the veteran/military population
- Integrate a patient-centered approach that will allow pain care practitioners to relate case examples by comparing and drawing parallels between the soldier or veteran patient vs "typical" patients
- Assess the future state of patients with acute and chronic pain and outline the balance of risk and benefit in planning stratified multimodal treatment in this pain population
