CME webinars help cardiologists diagnose, treat pulmonary arterial hypertension
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is one of five subtypes of pulmonary hypertension (PH), a progressive disease that has poor five-year survival rates. Because PAH is rare and produces symptoms similar to those of other heart and lung conditions, it is often overlooked in the differential diagnosis. Further, when PAH is considered, clinicians often fail to conduct all necessary tests such as right heart catheterization, which is crucial to an accurate diagnosis; hence, diagnosis might be delayed for three or four years. To improve diagnosis and outcomes for patients with PAH, Rockpointe and the Potomac Center for Medical Education will offer three live CME/MOC-eligible webinars (April 13, April 15, and April 20) during meetings hosted by state chapters of the American College of Cardiology (ACC).
Upon diagnosis, determination of risk is key to selecting the appropriate therapy for patients with PAH. Evidence-based guidance for establishing level of risk has been published, and clinicians have several classes of agents to choose from when developing a management strategy for PAH. The patient’s experience and treatment goals should also be considered, after which clinician and patient can work together to create an individualized plan. Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: Best Practice for Diagnosis and Management is an hour-long program geared toward cardiologists, the clinicians responsible for management of patients with PAH. Participants will receive up-to-date information about diagnostic criteria and evidence-based management of patients with PAH, and will learn how to effectively incorporate the patient perspective.

This free educational initiative is designed to address ACGME and NAM competencies, including delivering patient-centered care and practicing evidence-based medicine. At the program’s conclusion, participants should be able to:
- Use evidence-based recommendations to diagnose pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).
- Develop evidence-based individualized treatment strategies for patients with PAH.
- Implement strategies to incorporate the patient’s perspective into individualized management plans for PAH.
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the Potomac Center for Medical Education (PCME) and Rockpointe. PCME, which is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians, designates this live activity for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.
Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables participants to earn up to 1.0 Medical Knowledge MOC point in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program.
There is no fee for this activity, which is conducted in collaboration with Mended Hearts and is supported by an educational grant from Actelion Pharmaceuticals US, Inc., a Janssen Pharmaceutical Company of Johnson & Johnson. To receive credit, participants must register, view the live CME activity in its entirety, and then complete the post-test, with a score of 75% or better, and evaluation. The estimated time for completion of this activity is one hour. To receive a certificate, participants must demonstrate mastery of the presented material via the post-test. Participants are allowed to take the post-test multiple times.
