Advances in Cancer Screening and Detection: What PCPs Need to Know

Early detection of cancer is the most effective method to improve outcomes and reduce mortality. Cancer screening programs can identify cancer in early stages, allowing early diagnosis and prolonged survival. Unfortunately, while screening techniques exist for some major cancers, most cancers to not have effective, validated screening measures. Patients with these cancers are often diagnosed at later stages, resulting in poor outcomes. In recent years, large-scale gene sequencing and analysis of cell-free DNA have been investigated as a method for early cancer diagnosis. While these tests are currently investigational, they have been shown to be highly effective in detecting cancer in early stages of disease.

This activity, Advances in Cancer Screening and Detection: What PCPs Need to Know, will review current standards for early cancer screening and detection as well as emerging molecular screening technologies for early cancer detection.
